We refurbish donated technology and make sure it reaches people who need it most. Access to the right device can change what feels possible. It helps people apply for jobs, manage money, stay connected, learn new skills, and make choices for themselves.

Why digital access matters
So much of everyday life now happens online. Without access to technology, people can feel stuck or left behind.
At the same time, huge amounts of usable technology are being wasted.
These two problems sit side by side.
So much usable tech is being wasted
24.5 kg per person of electronic waste is created each year in the UK, including devices that still have life left in them.
At the same time, people are going without.
Millions of people across the UK lack access to suitable devices or basic digital skills, limiting their independence and choices.
Digital exclusion affects everyday life. It makes applying for work harder, managing money more stressful, and accessing support more complicated than it should be.
furbd exists to change that.

furbd is not about doing things for people. It is about giving people the tools, access, and confidence to take control of their own lives.
Digital access opens doors. It gives people options. It helps people move forward in ways that matter to them.

Learn by doing
furbd’s workshop is a hive of activity where students learn through real, practical and innovative work with technology.
We provide a safe and supportive environment where Middlesbrough College T-Level students have hands-on experience to test, learn and implement innovative solutions. They build real skills, gain confidence, and experience what working with technology is really like.
We also welcome people on Trailblazer placements, where individuals gain valuable work experience while helping to refurbish devices for the community. Every task contributes to something meaningful.
A supportive way to learn
Everyone learns differently. furbd respects that.
Learning here is practical and unpressured. Each member of the team is supported at their own pace. Individual strengths are recognised and encouraged.
For many people, especially those who have struggled in traditional settings, this safe and accepting environment makes learning feel comfortable, achievable and positive.
